“I do not have time for a marathon”

    May 29th, 2009
Toni Posted by Toni in Motivation, Quotes - 1 Comment

While talking to friends and family about my marathon experience and training, the most common response is “I would like to do a marathon, but I do not have time.” My response is, “Yea, tell me about it. I am full time graduate student. I had to schedule my training around classes; doing homework, papers, group projects, and readings; working 20 hours a week as a graduate assistant, and life itself.” After this response the person is dumbfounded and realizes that they do have time. A marathon is like anything else in life that you want to pursue…YOU MAKE THE TIME! It is no different from a persons hobby. You enjoy it so you make the time for it.

Another thing to realize is….there is not a good time to train for a marathon. We all live busy lives and there is always something in the way from training. That something will never go away. One year it will be one thing and the next year, it will be something else. Actually, training for a marathon makes a person better at life. The reason being…the things a person does to train for a marathon can be applied to other aspects of life. Example- time management. The training was important to me so I had to get my runs done early in the morning so I had the evening to do my homework, reading, etc. for my grad classes.  Another example- self confidence. The longer and longer each run gets for me, I achieved another goal in life. Yes, the miles may seem like a lot, but after a person completes an 18 mile run for the first time, victory is achieved. It is just like working. A person may have a lot of tasks to complete in one day. Looking at the list at first, it seems like a lot (just like those 18 miles did), but a person will have the confidence to complete the tasks because he/she can completed the 18 miles.

I could go on and on about having time for the marathon, but I will not bore you.

If you are considering a marathon, I encourage you to pursue it. A good book to read for anyone training for their first marathon is called The Non-Runner’s Marathon Trainer by David A. Whitsett, Forrest A. Dolgener, and Tanjala Mabon Kole published in 1998. Even if you have ran marathons, it is still a good read and may help you. There is a lot of good quotes and thoughts throughout the book on marathon training. My favorite quote comes from the very end of the book, “a marathon is short compared to the journey of life.”
